The Robot Garage is the story of our family, of following our own kid into business, of taking a gamble on something we felt passionate about, and the story of our new extended family of 50+ staff members, some who have worked tirelessly by our side since 2011 to create a maker space that teaches engineering and robotics to kids. Our mission is to create an “aha” moment every day for every guest, and to inspire the innovators of tomorrow with fun, hands-on, engineering experiences.
We have 3 daughters and have always been a "LEGO" family. As LEGO became an integral part of the student robotics community, our family grew along with it. When our oldest daughter, Jane, began to compete in the FIRST Robotics program, it was life-changing for her. When her team made it to the State Finals, we realized there were millions of kids like Jane, and if these students were not fortunate enough to be at a school with robotics, they had no access to these amazing programs. And depending on a number of variables, the experience on different teams can really vary.
Jane's idea was for The Robot Garage to provide a space in the community to address these needs with high-quality and consistent fun, hands-on engineering experiences. She has worked by our side since 8th grade to build the business to where it is today. Our education department has developed curriculum with 300+ workshops that align with the national science standards. We work with 200+ schools, and thousands of students in camps and after-school classes. Our shop is an extension of this with a focus on maker products and has become one of LEGO’s 10 largest specialty stores. We also host 300+ birthday parties annually offering first-time robotics experiences to thousands.
Michigan has a deep well of engineering and robotics talent and because The Robot Garage is based here, we have been able to tap into that generous community to enrich our programs. We work with retired engineers, robotics team mentors, FIRST in Michigan, and STEM educators throughout the country.
We opened a second location in the fall 2014 in Rochester Hills, with an eye on further expansion down the road. We receive emails regularly asking about coming to other areas, but we know we must first perfect our model at home.
As for The Robot Garage family, our daughters have had a front-row seat to the start-up process of a business and the journey has brought us together in very unique ways. Our extended family of staff members includes students who have been with us from the start, and we have had the privilege of watching them grow into management positions, and take on leading roles in our company. The business itself, is now part of a far wider family of staff, schools, and families in our community.
We invite you to join our growing family at The Robot Garage and to continue with us on our journey to inspire some of the innovators of tomorrow with fun, hands-on, engineering experiences.
